Casting metal
I am trying to melt some brass in a Crucible inside a pottery kiln. The kiln goes to over 1200 deg C. Does anyone have any plans or ideas for building a small furnace as when i open the kiln door at such high temperatures i can't get near the Crucible to get it out, too much heat. Any tips greatly appreciated. Alluminium never seemed to give me this amount of problem, although it was interesting when i set fire to the concrete when i spilt a small amount on the floor. Had a go today at casting the brass. It was flipping hot when i opened the kiln door, the temperature was 1076deg C. It nearly took my breath away. Any way the casting failed because as i was pouring it a skin formed on top and this stopped it coming out properly. The finished article was not complete and the metal looks mucky, maybe some contaminents in the brass, so i will try again another day. Jim Allen

Casting done and seems to be ok. I have discovered that with brass you get a lot of dross on the top when molten. I am a bit of a coward when it comes to dealing with heat at 1100 deg C. so i left it in the crucible when pouring. A little bit has come through but it seems to give the part a bit of pattiner as they say. Anyway all done now and the next bit, another silencer for spare, will be out of alloy. Hope to see you all on Sunday, tea and biscuits are all ready. Jim
