New prospective bullet owner. Hi all Casey here, I spoke to Jim a few weeks ago about Enfields, and have decided to register on the forum, as he suggested. I am interested to hear details of how the bikes fare when used quite intensively, partuicularly the classic models. I currently have a HD sportster, but much of my leisure riding is done down gravelly lanes, so fancy a bike more suited to british b roads. I also ride in central London, and wonder if the classic clutch is up to it?

Hi Casey, The classic clutch is well up to it as long as it is the later 5 plate clutch and not the 3 plate that was fitted to the 350 some years ago.People say that they have clutch slipping problems but you find that that is mainly due to bad adjustment and poor maintenance. People put all sorts of different oils in the chaincase to stop slip etc. but the ordinary oil is good enough as long as it is motorcycle oil and not car oil, different additives in m/c oil designed for clutches to run in.They can slip a bit if they have been stood for a few wekks between use. This is due to the plates soaking the oil up, after a run the oil will be flung out by centrifugal force and the plates wil dry out and friction will return. It is also important to know that when building a clutch that the springs are not all of the same strength. There are 3 light springs and 3 heavy springs. They should be positioned light, heavy, light, heavy etc and then checked to see that the clutch lifts square.
Hope this helps,
Jim
